Route description

The educational forest path "Mrtvice reke Mura" is a path that leads between the dead arms of the Mura river, where we can best see for ourselves the diverse and rich life in the floodplain world along the Mura. This is a 2.5 km long marked forest trail along the backwaters of the Mura River, designed by Verže biologists Božena Kosi, Dane Katalinic and Cvetka Ivančič.

Its custodian is Franc Kosi, who also guides students and teachers, laymen and experts through it, and during the walk and tour explains the ecology of said bow, presents the plant and animal species of the bow and the life of the people along the Mura.

The route starts on the eastern side of the railway line and ends at the ford over the Mura, which leads to the Island of Love in Ižakovci and the "Büjraštva" museum there. 35 species of trees and shrubs (native and non-native) are marked with signs along the route.

Not far from the path, in the parish forest, there are also two trees of exceptional dimensions that are included in the list of natural values: the black poplar (Populus nigra) is a natural value of national importance, while the elm or long-stemmed elm (Ulmus leavis) is a natural value of local importance .

Along the learning path is also a stand of planted Canadian black walnut (Juglans nigra), which was planted in 1935 by the students of the Veržej Elementary School. In addition to softwood and hardwood bow trees, the learning trail also introduces the vegetation of the flood meadow with protected narrow-leaved narcissus (Narcissus poeticus L.) and soft-haired lungwort (Pulmonaria molissima), and in the logs with plants in the undergrowth and also with rare species such as small-flowered sedge (Omphalodes scorpioides (Haenke) Schrad.) and sedge (Carex strigosa Huds.).

Unfortunately, there are more and more invasive alien plants in the logs, e.g. Impatiens glandulifera (Impatiens glandulifera) and Japanese knotweed (Reneutria japonica Houtt.) crowding out native vegetation in river arches.
